LB Showroom : Zenobia Morrow

Imagine your wildest dreams. Imagine painting works of art that will one day be the future of the new Black Renaissance. Picture your greatest fantasy. Picture a flight to New York, a trip to Europe, a wonderful stay in Dubai. Draw your ideal young woman. “Pretty, witty, girlie, worldly… right?

As many people fantasize about a lavish lifestyle that entails traveling the world, creating the future of Black art, or just being plain beautiful and well respected lady, I was fortunate enough to interview a woman who doesn’t have to fantasize, for this is truly her life. I present to you Zenobia Morrow. A Howard University alumnus, Zenobia is already taking the world by storm.

It is rare to see her without a glowing face or fabulous attire which is only appropriate for such a sophisticated young woman. Along with her many endeavors, Zenobia is also the creator of the very successful and very well known blog site, Juneseven.netA trip to this site and you can read about her marvelous black pin up art. You can see pieces of her creative talent from my personal favorite, the wonderful blackfaces collection, or more recently, read about her stay in Dubai. Coco Chanel once stated that “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous. Well a job well done Mademoiselle Morrow.

How did you get involved in the arts, especially painting?
When I was little we had an artist living in our basement. His name was Peter Washington, he did wood working and painting. I would go and watch him on the weekends he would let me play around down there. That was the beginning of my involvement in the arts. In school I was always in art classes and in the summer I would go to arts camps. Also my parents were very supportive, always taking me to museums and galleries. Both collect art as well.

You just recently graduated from the prestigious Howard University, what are your aspirations for the next couple of years?

I pretty much plan 6 months in advance lol. I am moving to Dubai in early September and then who knows!

As an artist do you see a decline in the interest of art in the youth, and do you feel it’s necessary to be involved in the arts from a young age?
I don’t see a decline in interest as much as a decline in opportunity. Children will always be interested in the arts because it is self-expression and there is nothing more you want as child than to express what is inside of your heart. It is so necessary to have opportunities for children to be involved in the arts.

If you could be remembered for one thing what would you want it to be?
Style and substance.

What matters more to you- How you perceive your work or how others accept it?
I would love to say that the artist is the only one who matters in the art making process, but that would be a lie. Art making is a business like any other business. I may want to explore one subject or work in one way but in order to do that I have to make money and make art that people will buy. It’s about balance.

If a child came up to you and asked you about your career and how to get started what would be the best piece of advice to give them?
Lol I give advice like that to people all the time! Old and young. I would say if you are just starting out in any field you have to learn everything you can about the industry and perfect your craft. Research research research! What artist do you like? Who are their agents? Where do they show? Go to museums. Use the Internet and books to become familiar with movements etc. Draw everyday. Paint everyday. Never stop learning and working. I might not say all of this to a child though. When I taught drawing (in the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington DC) we just really worked on the basics and “drawing what you see, not what you think you see.” Build a good foundation; I guess that is the first step.

You have a blog site Juneseven; can you tell me a little bit about it and what made you decide to create a blog?
I have had a few gallery type websites just to give people an idea about my work. Juneseven came because I also wanted to share a bit of my experiences and my life. What/who inspires me, that sort of thing. I also needed a blog so my family and friends could keep up with me because im not so good at calling lol.

You have numerous beautiful paintings on display on the site, do you plan on selling them or is painting just a beautiful hobby?
Thank you! Yes do sell paintings. Sometimes I just have stuff lying around that I will sell I also create LeBelle Noir pieces by commission. I have been working on getting LeBelle Noir product made because of the overwhelming response to the girls. I look forward to making my work available to more people.

Carta : Skination

A lot of people put inferences on clothing and fashion in itself.
But some down play the importance of great skin.
Good skin is essential to completing a fabulous look.

People always tell me that I have perfect or flawless skin ((smiles)) but there are certain steps that I take to keep my skin clear. I personally hate bumps and breakouts ((especially from shaving)) so I use to go to the dermatologist once a month to keep my skin clear but that shit got expensive. It worked. But I learned that great skin can make or make break you. Even if your ensemble is hot, people will skip over those fabulous choo’s or loubuton’s and remember that you had BAD skin.
A fresh face can take you from daytime to nighttime. A little concealer around the eyes, some bronzer, mascara and lip-gloss is all you need!!! Heavy make up ((pancake faces are out, we consider that being LATE)) That’s why it’s so important to have good skin.

Now, I don’t want to get all-political but some girls who aren’t naturally pretty might need to BEAT their mugs extra hard. Let’s face it; some girls have a hard face. So if you do wear a lot of make-up make sure to wash it off at night. ((I would hate to see your pillowcases if you didn’t))
The products that are key to a fresh face:
Cetaphil face wash, Neutrogena toner and Fashion Fair’s Daily Moisturizer SP15.

Disclaimer: If you have acne I suggest you go to the dermatologist.

that’s all.

1-of a-Kind : Jay Wilson Interview

I think myspace is a great marketing tool for young talented people and like many, this is when I was first stung by the Jay Wilson bug. I randomly went to his page and was blown away!! His collection screams high fashion. I called up my resources and had to get an interview with him. The World has to see his pieces!!!

Jay Wilson has shown his clothing line at numerous fashion events and functions. From Caribbean Fashion Week, to Brooklyn Fashion Week (end). (( Come on BK!! )) Jay Wilson is the fresh face in the fashion industry and with a friends list like Patricia Field and Kesh, I would mos def look out for him. I can't wait untill he comes out with a men's line, I so need someone to start dressing me!!

What is the name of your line and where did it originate?
The Name of my main line is self-titled Jay Wilson, which is the name of my alter ego. My soon to be, diffusion line is entitled B.L.I.N.D which is an acronym for Be Loved In Notorious Doses...

What made you want to design a fashion line?
To be honest I have no idea it just kind of happened. I’d always been around creative things; I’ve been dancing and performing on stage for years and after high school, I applied for Musical Theatre School and didn’t get in, It was a total shock to my system I was left with no idea of what direction to send my life in...I had to go back to the drawing board and it just so happened that I came across the prospectus for a Fashion Course at Westminster College in London and I decided to go and the rest is history...I just believe that its got alot to do with fate...every thing happens for a reason.

How would you describe your work?
I would have to describe my designs as chic, elegant, and above all timeless.

Who do you have in mind when you design?
For me when I design I’m normally thinking about the strong females who surround me in my life,i’m so blessed to haves such strong woman around me....I have my mum ,who is just myultimate hero.
My auntie Joolz and Christie Dinham (CEO of Tyler Media and Fashion How) who both have such belief in what I do. Its people like them who constantly drive and inspire me. There fearlessness and the passion that all these women have is just unbelievable...I sometimes feel unworthy to be in there presence...It sounds bizarre, but it is so true.

What are your signatures in your designs?
I would defiantly say fabrics such as Chiffon, wool crêpe, silk satin, and the way in which I chose to use the fabrics, elasticised waistbands and buttons...I just love them!

What is your favourite piece from any of your collections?
My personal favourite has to be the “red-riding hood” jacket from my Spring 07 collectition, it’s just so fierce...and it looks fabulous on every one, it’s a statement piece without being in your face...defiantly a classic.

Is designing difficult for you and, if so, what drives you?
No way! I have always had a great Illustration talent so getting my ideas down on something physical has never been a problem. In terms of ideas and concepts, I guess that just comes naturally.ok, so sometimes I do get artistic blocks, but that really don’t last for long. Design is a real joy for me I absolutely enjoy it.

What is your definition of beauty?
For me beauty is something that comes from for within...I know it one of the biggest cliché around... but it’s true....I love to see women who have confidence and somewhat of a purity to them....its doesn’t matter whether you have false nails,make-up,and a full head of weave on..its more about the energy that you give off to the world.
I’ve seen a million and onewomen who totally ooze of beauty but there attitude or approach to life is simply all wrong...and it brings them down...making them somewhat ugly...a lot of them just need to find that switch to turn that light on...and the thing is every single person has it...it all depends on whether you want to find it or not....

Have you ever been influenced or moved by the reaction to your designs?
I cannot even go on to describe the feeling that I get when people comment on my designs; It just makes all my hard work mean so much more.’m constantly being influenced by clients ,press and stylists who I work with....its actually crazy...but its almost like a partnership in a way and I like that...its really nice.

As a designer, who do you wear and what is in your closet?
Oh god that’s one huge question...i wear every one...if its One thing I adore about fashion it’s the dressing up...I am so inspired by Patricia Fields (the stylist for the sex and the city and the Devil wears Prada), her ability to mix clothes and styles is mind blowing...the colours the textures, the prints...god I know her work form a mile away.
I wear everything and anything..from Couture Galliano to things I find in thrift stores....it’s more about the complete look for me.....if it looks hot its got my name all over it...but one thing I must say is I always try to look chic....style is eternal....I’m not really one for trends...if I like it I’ll wear it...I just don’t care...I think that’s the great thing about Europe...where just all so different...its totally Fierce!!

What can the public expect from your line in the future?
They can expect to go B.L.I.N.D...That is all I’m allowed to say for now...

When and where can the public purchase pieces from your collection?
At the moment, everything from the main line (Jay Wilson) is made-to-order...but my diffusion line (B.L.I.N.D) is going to be available via the Jay Wilson website Jay Wilson Believes.com...shipped everywhere from London to Iraq, im going to make the whole world see white...:-)

Hall Closet Pick Of The Week: ANTM

On Wednesday September 18, 2007 I was at fashion show practice of course but I had my good friend Marquis (Mr. Carta himself) to tape the first episode of America's Next Top Model Cycle 9. While I was on vacation in Los Angeles during Labor Day I haulted traffic because of the billboard advertisement for this season. It gave me everything I needed. Plus more. Come on futuristic fashion. After catching the first episode I was slightly impressed. Tyra of course sat in the name (meaning she looked absolutely amazing), but the girls were quite mediocre. Im not doubting this season by no means because I know fashion and modeling is all about being molded. This cycle should be quite interesting and Im excited about the look it is going to give. Get into "phish" after the cut, let me know what you think! And oh yeah... Its an extra surprise included as well.....

Hall Closet : Keep or Delete

The RISE of FALL......
This season brings about a change... A change that will take you as far as your imagination will allow it to. From the RISING of the ankle boot, and the ribbed tight, to the DEMISE of the infamous skinny jean and the Bubble dress... Designers as well as fashion junkies have taken the initiative to exploit.... was it all worth it?? Only the chic will tell..... Who will survive the RISE of FALL. KEEP or DELETE FALL 07....

Hall Closet : Waisted

You’d think a seasoned supermodel like Gisele Bundchen would be able to negotiate with a Dolce & Gabbana mirrored catwalk in sky-high mirrored stilettos without a thought, but when walking with the hotness of the new Dolce & Gabbana Corset Belt, things just got way more “fierce”. With Dolce & Gabbana upping the ante from “molto sexy” to “molto erotico” the new Corset Belt is this seasons “it” waist accessory. From Beyonce to Jennifer Lopez rocking this sickening piece of lite metal, it has definatley made its way to the top on this seasons trends list...

Juice Box : D&G Steel Link

Now I’m not usually big on watches but, this Dolce & Gabbanna steel link watch made my head turn. Not use to seeing retro looks like this from D&G. Reasonably priced at $275; water-resistance to 50m and with a steel bracelet with butterfly buckle. You can find this time piece at D& G boutiques. A chucky pieces like this is sure to keep it funky coming into fall. The vibrant colors will set you apart from Ben and Susie sitting across from you with their Paul Franks joints on. The geometric look tops off a sick street wear fit with a luxurious twist. Let me find a D& G boutique in my travels and I promise it will be sitting pretty on my wrist.

Juice Box: Takashi Murakami

Let me just give what’s past due; mad props to Mr. Murakami. This man is a genius. Yes we all know he did Kanye’s album art & what a stuntastic job he did with that project. The album in itself is a collectors item if I may say so myself. So if you have already bought the album go buy another one for keep sakes…LOL…shout out to Ye. ((*cough cough)) Back to the subject, Mr. Murakami has done extraordinary collaborations with LV and many more.

Not to mention the Hiropon statue! Seeing his work just brings in so much youth and energy. It takes me back to sipping apple juice from a carton and late nights watching “I Love Lucy”. I’ll never grow up—imma grown ass kid. Oh yea…and he co-signed with Kanye in making his new Jesus piece. That thang is NASTY. Matter fact just go Google him right now!

Juice Box : Sham Vs. Kanye

Being the big Kanye fan that I am; I flew out to New York ecstatic knowing that during my stay I would be able to meet Mr. West, and get my signed certificate. Turning the corner at FYE, and the kids are already chanting "la la la" with the cutouts on. It finally hit me; Im about to meet my idol. And I have no shame in saying that. So I pre-ordered my album, threw on my Kanye Wezzy shades and I'm in full effect for the man of the hour.

I'm not even gone trip on the fact that he wasn't on time cause you know what he'd say "I'll be there in five minutes-five hours later, I'll be there in five minutes-im so wild wit it. Been bulls**tin but I finally arrived with it-I know it's late & I took all year but you can stop complaining cause im finally here".

And then the car pulled up; Don C, then yessir Mr.WEST! Kids believe the hype, dude was fresh and you know his crew was fly. That's when the shit hit the fan. Security was crazy; you would have thought the president had just walked up in FYE. Immediately they started stressing that there were no cameras allowed, WTF! NO PHOTOS, fam you telling me I'm bout to meet my idol and I cant get a picture!?! Yea I was feeling real salty bout that for a minute. But fuck it I'm still bout to see him. As soon as I walked threw the doors my purse was passed down to about twenty security guards. ((lol)) Nah I'm lyin', but that's what it felt like. Mr. West was giving a very simple look but simplicity kills all. So I know you all are wondering what was said when I finally meet him. Well I'm not going be exact but I keep it simple. Never been the type to go dumb when meeting a celeb for the first time. And I mean- I had to let him know I had swag too.

So the time has come and the numbers are in; Kanye WON! DUH! If you didn’t know that before 9/11/07 then you’re STUPID. Now that all the Britney drama has calmed down Mr. West should have your full undivided attention. Sorry I’m a die hard Kanye fan and I only give props when it due, so here we go. I’m pumpin’ this album so hard and once again going mention that the art work on the album was done by the famous Japanese pop artist Murakami.

As for the music, you know Kanye does none other than give you quality G.O.O.D music. Listening to Ye just makes me want to get my shit together; strait up organize my closet and fly to Japan to invest in some Murakami. It’s such a summertime soundtrack, aside from being the soundtrack to my life. From “Good Life” being that cookout banger—to “Stronger” roaring from the drop-top. Graduation is defiantly going to be giving me light on those dreary and cold winter days. And my favorite joint would have to be “I Wonder”. It’s just one of those songs I just want to scream at haters when they ask me why I do the things I do.

The album is such a classic. I can’t stress that enough that if you don’t already have it, go get it. There’s something for everyone, from that ultra confidence banger like “Champion” and when you need a boost to finish a days hard work “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” is that go to song. The story telling in “Big Brother” is like no other. I mean---the lyrics are just NASTY. Damn Ye you really put yo foot in this one. Now let me just end this by saying; did you see The Education of Kanye West on BET? When was the last time you since a rapper performing playing the piano!?! Pssssh….smh. He’s a genius and I don’t use that word loosely.

ps- Hey 50, does this mean your retiring? lol

((fyi: smh-shaking my head))
